Muthoot Family Net Worth 2026: How Kerala’s Richest Business Family Built $9.2B

Forbes values the Muthoot family at $9.2B, 24th in India and first among Malayali families. Here is where the money sits, why it beats Yusuff Ali's total, and what changed at Muthoot Finance on 1 October 2026.

Muthoot family net worth is $9.2 billion (about ₹88,320 crore) on Forbes’ 2026 India’s Richest list, valued as of 30 September 2026. That ranks the family 24th in India and first among Malayali families. Almost all of it comes from Muthoot Finance, India’s largest gold loan NBFC.

Key takeaways

  • Forbes puts the Muthoot family at $9.2B (about ₹88,320 crore), ranked 24th in India as of 30 September 2026, up from 37th and $7.8B in October 2024.
  • The family total beats Yusuff Ali's $5.75B (47th) because it adds several members' holdings, while Forbes lists the Muthoot brothers individually at about $2B each.
  • Nearly all the wealth traces to listed Muthoot Finance, which posted Q2 FY27 consolidated profit of ₹3,278 crore and loan AUM of ₹2.09 trillion.
  • Alexander George became Managing Director on 1 October 2026, and George Alexander Muthoot moved to a vice-chairman role.
  • Muthoot Fincorp, Muthoot Microfin and Muthoot Capital belong to the separate Muthoot Pappachan Group (Muthoot Blue), so don't merge the two groups' numbers.

It is a bigger number than any single person in our full list of Malayali billionaires. The company’s leadership also changed on 1 October 2026. This piece covers how the fortune is built, why the estimates disagree, and who runs Muthoot Finance now.

Muthoot family net worth in 2026: the headline number

Forbes lists the family at $9.2 billion, rank 24, with the figure dated 30 September 2026. In its October 2024 list the family was 37th with $7.8B, so the gain is about $1.4B and 13 places in two years. Among the Forbes India rich list 2026 Malayalis, that makes the Muthoots first.

You will see other Muthoot family net worth totals online. They are not errors so much as different snapshots:

  • Forbes (30 Sep 2026): $9.2B, rank 24.
  • 360 ONE Wealth Creators List 2026: ₹93,274 crore ($9,978M) for “George Jacob Muthoot and Family”. It says six family members appear on that list but gives no as-of date.
  • Jumpp (tracker): $10.4B.
  • WealthRank (tracker): $8.4B combined for four billionaires linked to Muthoot Finance.

The gaps come down to dates and methods, plus choices about which relatives and holdings count. Share prices move daily, so a figure from September and one from late October won’t match even with identical methods.

My view: anchor on the Forbes figure because it is dated and widely cited, and read the rest as a range of roughly $8B to $10B, not as competing truths.

Why are the Muthoots the richest family in Kerala?

Because Forbes ranks the Muthoot family as one wealth unit at $9.2B, and no individual Malayali is close to that total. M.A. Yusuff Ali, the richest individual Malayali, is at $5.75B. The comparison is family versus person, and that matters.

EntityForbes net worthNational rankMain business
Muthoot family$9.2B (~₹88,320 cr)24Muthoot Finance (gold loans)
M.A. Yusuff Ali$5.75B (~₹55,200 cr)47Lulu Group (retail)

Both figures come from the 2026 list as reported by Kerala Kaumudi, which says seven Malayalis made it. Ask a different question, who is the richest person, and the answer flips to Yusuff Ali Lulu. Forbes puts the Muthoot brothers at about $2B each.

So the richest family in Kerala is not richer because one Muthoot out-earns Yusuff Ali. It is richer because several relatives hold shares in one fast-growing, listed lender. For scale, our Shah Rukh Khan net worth piece puts the actor’s empire at Rs 10,800 crore. The dates differ, but the Muthoot family fortune is roughly eight times that.

Forbes India rich list 2026 Malayalis: how the Muthoots moved

The family’s climb from 37th to 24th is the story inside the Malayali ranking. Yusuff Ali sits at 47th on the same list. I found no Malayali between the two in my sources, but I haven’t seen all seven names laid out, so check Forbes before quoting the order.

For the other end of the scale, creator income, our ranking of Malayalam YouTubers shows how different it looks.

How does the fortune split between Muthoot Finance and the wider group?

Almost all of the Muthoot family net worth sits in the family’s stake in Muthoot Finance. According to Forbes, the family controls India’s leading lender against gold. How the $9.2B divides among relatives, or whether it includes other group holdings, is not published in anything I could verify.

The group itself is old. It was founded in 1887 as a timber and food-grain trading firm, with roots in Kozhencherry, per Forbes. George Jacob Muthoot is group chairman. His brother M.G. George Muthoot, who ran the company with three brothers, died in 2021.

George Alexander Muthoot net worth and his brothers’ holdings

Forbes’ real-time profiles show George Alexander Muthoot at $2B (21 October 2026) and George Thomas Muthoot at $2.1B (15 October 2026). Together that is about $4.1B, less than half the $9.2B family total.

The rest sits with other relatives and holdings that Forbes doesn’t itemise. That is why the family number dwarfs any one brother’s, and why articles quoting it as one man’s net worth are wrong.

One oddity: $9.2B is about 85% of Muthoot Finance’s market cap of roughly $10.85B (19 October 2026, per tracker WealthRank), more than the family could hold alone. So the Forbes figure likely includes other assets or uses a different share price. Forbes doesn’t say which, and I won’t guess further.

Muthoot Group companies: which ones count toward the family’s wealth?

The Muthoot Group’s own site describes 20 business divisions across financial services, wealth management, money transfer, forex and securities. But there are two separate family branches, and mixing them up is the most common error online.

Muthoot Pappachan Group (Muthoot Blue)Muthoot Fincorp, Muthoot Capital Services, Muthoot Microfin, Muthoot Housing Finance, Muthoot EximSeparate family branch; whether Forbes counts it is not stated

Per the Muthoot Pappachan Group entry, Muthoot Microfin, Muthoot Fincorp and Muthoot Capital Services sit in that second branch, not under Muthoot Finance. So the Muthoot family net worth in this article is about the Muthoot Finance side. Treat the Muthoot Blue companies as a different story.

The group site also quotes 5,840 branches, which looks stale. Forbes counts more than 7,300 for Muthoot Finance, and Wikipedia says 7,500 plus, with 53,000 plus employees in 2026. Use the newer figures.

Who owns Muthoot Finance?

Muthoot Finance is a listed company controlled by the Muthoot family. George Jacob Muthoot is chairman and the family holds the promoter stake. Public shareholders own the rest. The exact promoter percentage is where the sources disagree.

MarketScreener shows George Alexander Muthoot at 15.8% (as of June 2025). WealthRank shows 18.57% for another holder. I couldn’t verify either against an exchange filing, so don’t treat any single percentage as settled. If you need the Muthoot Finance owner breakdown, open the latest shareholding pattern on the BSE or NSE site.

The listing is why the Muthoot family net worth moves so much. Forbes values the stake at market prices, so it rises and falls with the stock. WealthRank put the company’s market cap at $10.85B on 19 October 2026 and links four billionaires to it.

Gold loans in numbers: what Q2 FY27 says about the engine

This is the business behind the Muthoot family net worth, and it is running hot. For the quarter to 30 September 2026, Business Standard reports consolidated profit after tax up 36% to ₹3,278 crore. Gold-loan assets under management (AUM) rose 43% to ₹1.79 trillion.

MetricValueChange
Consolidated PAT₹3,278 cr+36% YoY
Standalone PAT₹2,977 cr+27% YoY
Consolidated loan AUM₹2.09 trn+42% YoY
Gold-loan AUM₹1.79 trn+43% YoY
Gold holdings204 tonnes+3.6% QoQ
Average ticket size₹1,55,600vs ₹1,49,600 in Q1

Standalone PAT was ₹2,977 crore against ₹2,345 crore a year earlier, and standalone income rose 37% to ₹8,842 crore. Management has raised FY27 AUM growth guidance to about 25%, per DSIJ. Actual growth is running at 42%, so the guidance is either cautious or growth will slow. I lean toward cautious.

Ticket size rose about 4% in one quarter while gold held rose 3.6%. A higher gold price likely explains part of that, though the sources don’t say. For FY26, a secondary source reports consolidated PAT of ₹10,607 crore, up 98%, with a 300% dividend. Confirm that against the company filing before you quote it.

What changed at Muthoot Finance on 1 October 2026?

Alexander George became Managing Director on 1 October 2026. George Alexander Muthoot, the outgoing MD, moved to a vice-chairman role. K R Bijimon was elevated to CEO. The company’s release, dated 3 August 2026, says the plan ensures continuity. The change does not alter the Muthoot family net worth directly, since the stake stays with the family.

Board filings give both Alexander George and George Alexander Muthoot terms from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2031. They also show George Muthoot George, George Alexander and George Muthoot Jacob reappointed Whole-time Directors for five years from 15 December 2026.

What this means for the Muthoot Finance owner family’s grip

It looks like a classic handover to the next generation, and the family stays in the boardroom. The releases I found don’t spell out family ties for Alexander George, so I won’t. Still, nothing here suggests the Muthoot Finance owner family is loosening control.

Two cautions. Titles differ by source: the company says “Executive Vice Chairman”, the filing summary says “Vice Chairman and Whole-time Director”. And I couldn’t confirm shareholder approval at the AGM, so the 1 October date rests on board filings and news reports. Some pages, including the Wikipedia Muthoot Group infobox and MarketScreener, still show George Alexander Muthoot as MD or CEO.

Separately, subsidiary Muthoot Money earned ₹191 crore PAT in Q2 FY27 on ₹12,716 crore of loan AUM. It will merge into the parent from an appointed date of 1 April 2027, which simplifies the structure.

What could move the Muthoot family’s wealth next?

Mostly the share price, which tracks gold and sentiment. The Muthoot family net worth is tied to one listed stock, so the risks are fairly concentrated.

  • Share price vs profit. Per Zeebiz, the stock is near a 52-week low even as profit jumps. If it stays there, the next Forbes valuation could be lower than $9.2B.
  • Gold price. Loan values and ticket sizes follow gold. A sharp fall would pressure collateral cover and growth.
  • Regulation. The RBI fined Muthoot Finance ₹5.80 lakh in July 2026 for KYC and transaction-monitoring non-compliance. The sum is small, but it shows the lender is under supervision. Tighter rules on lending against gold would hit the whole sector.
  • Integration. The Muthoot Money merger and the new management team both need to go smoothly through 2027.

How to quote the $9.2B Muthoot family figure

Quote the Muthoot family net worth as $9.2B, 24th, as of 30 September 2026, and name Forbes. When you meet a different figure, check its date and whether it covers a family or a single person. Don’t add the Muthoot Pappachan Group’s companies to this total.

Anyone following Kerala billionaires for work or study should watch two things: Muthoot Finance’s next quarterly results and the next Forbes list. Both will show whether the October 2026 handover changed anything. This is a wealth explainer, not investment advice, and a rich-list rank is not a reason to buy the stock.
